ENGL-099 Foundations of College WritingCredits 3 / 3 Contact Hours Pre-requisite: Placement into ACRD 080 ; Placement into ENGL-099 or higher on the MCC placement test.
Co-requisite: ENGL 101 . This writing course is paired with ENGL 101 to provide students with additional reading, writing, and critical thinking support for meeting ENGL 101 course objectives. This course will help students develop as readers, writers, and critical thinkers through discussion, workshop, conferencing, and reading/writing assignments that complement ENGL 101 work. A personal approach helps students enhance their writing abilities, resolve writing problems, and explore writing strategies. Coregistering for linked sections of ENGL 101 ALP and ENGL 099 ALP is required. Students will earn separate grades for each course. This course is pass/fail (graded S/U).
Course Outcomes Use a process approach to writing to discover, develop, support, and organize main ideas for essay assignments.
1. Learn and apply different reading strategies to improve comprehension of a variety of texts.
2. Demonstrate and practice specific strategies and behaviors linked to student success, including time management, attending and participating in class, and consistently completing required work.
3. Reflect critically on progress as writer, reader, and student.
4. Use academic computing tools (MS Word/Google Docs, Canvas, MCC email).
5. Practice MLA-style quoting, citing, and documentation.
6. Engage with instructor and classmates about writing in progress, including individual instructor/student meetings.
7. Revise at least 2 assignments to a 2.0/satisfactory or higher:
a. an ENGL 101 essay (two or more pages prior to the Works Cited page) that incorporates an outside source and includes quotations, MLA-style documentation, and a Works Cited page.
b. one other developed piece of writing (two or more pages prior to the Works Cited page, if a Works Cited page is needed).
