The Associate in Science (AS) Degree is designed primarily for students who plan to transfer to a four-year college or university with a major in natural or physical sciences, mathematics, or in preparation for professional fields such as medicine, dentistry, dietetics, environmental science, natural resources or engineering.  This degree meets the Michigan Transfer Agreement (MTA) requirements, satisfying 28-30 General Education hours and additional general education courses for a Bachelor’s Degree.

It is extremely important to consider the requirements at the college you plan to transfer to when selecting courses.

General Education Requirements


Humanities (6-7 credits)


Students must successfully complete 2 courses from two different academic disciplines

  • Humanities courses include: Arts, Communication*, Foreign Language, Literature, Philosophy Credits 6 / 7 Contact Hours

*If a communication class is taken in the Writing/Communication category, it cannot be counted again as Humanities.

Social Science (6-8 credits)


Students must successfully complete 2 courses from two different academic disciplines

  • Social Science courses include: Anthropology, Economics, Geography, History, Political Science, Psychology, Sociology Credits 6 / 8 Contact Hours

Mathematics (9-10 credits)


Students must successfully complete the following mathematics courses

Science (9-10 credits)


Students must successfully complete 2 science courses from two different Science disciplines.  Class should be selected depending on the degree pathway the student selects.

  • Pathway choices include:  Biology/Chemistry/Geology, Engineering, Mathematics or Physics/Astronomy Credits 9 / 10 Contact Hours

Select Additional Mathematics, Science and Computer Science** Courses (dependent on pathway) to complete credits for the Associate in Science degree (21-26 credits)


  • Additional courses to take are dependent upon your area of study.
  • Please see specific degree pathways in Biology/Chemistry/Geology, Engineering, Mathematics or Physics/Astronomy as well as degree requirements at the institution you are transferring to. Credits 21 / 26 Contact Hours

**Only select Computer Science courses are approved.

Program Total: Credits 62 / 62 Contact Hours


Notes:


  1. A 2.0 or higher is required in each course counting toward the Michigan Transfer Agreement (MTA) designation.
  2. All course and degree requirements must be met
  3. 15 credits minimum must be earned at MCC
  4. Minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0
