ACRD-090 Strategic Reading for Sciences & Technology

Pre-requisite: Placement into ACRD-090 or successful completion of ACRD-080 or ELAP-110 with a minimum grade of 2.0.
This course provides skills and strategies in critical reading and critical thinking specific to comprehending the complexities of science and technology texts for college level topics and materials.

Course Outcomes

1.   Apply appropriate reading strategies to activate prior knowledge, set purposes for reading and monitor comprehension for structures of science and technology texts.

2.   Determine the meaning of word parts, key terms, and other content-specific words and phrases as they are used in scientific or technical context.

3.   Cite specific textual evidence to support analysis of the assigned reading text.

4.   Determine the main idea of a text and analyze its development to provide an objective summary.

5.   Analyze the author’s purpose and tone in scientific and technical text.

6.   Utilize multiple sources of information in order to activate prior knowledge and address a question or proposed solutions.

7.   Identify and analyze an author’s pattern of organization in scientific and technical text.

8.   Utilize information from a range of sources to form a cohesive understanding of a concept while using collaboration to resolve conflicting information.

9.   Recognize the importance of critical thinking in evaluating information.
