FRSC-165 Introduction to Autopsy Techniques

Pre-requisite: Placement into ACRD-090, ACRD-091 or ACRD-092, completion of ELAP-110 with a minimum grade of 2.0, or successful completion of ACRD-080. Additional Pre-requisites: Approved admission to the autopsy assistant program; Must be at least 18 years of age; Passed a criminal background check and health screening within last year; Signature of coordinator
This course teaches the fundamental techniques and procedures used in postmortem examinations in hospital and medical examiner settings. Through a combination of hands-on practice using models and simulations, along with lectures and case studies, students will learn the core skills required in assisting with autopsy procedures including but not limited to record keeping and identification, radiography, photography, external examination, evisceration, and block dissection of the adult, perinatal, and pediatric decedent are reviewed. In addition, students will have 9-12 hours of autopsy observations in association with approved facilities during this course.

Course Outcomes

Demonstrate Autopsy Preparation Techniques: Use models and simulations to demonstrate proper body preparation for autopsy, including securing and positioning the body.
Assist in Documentation and Evidence Collection: Accurately document and collect evidence during simulated autopsy scenarios, including photographic and physical evidence, ensuring proper chain of custody.
Identify and Handle Body Organs: Properly identify, examine, and handle internal organs using models and simulations, and understand the importance of each organ’s role in the autopsy process.
Apply Universal Precautions and Safety Protocols: Demonstrate adherence to universal precautions and personal protective equipment (PPE) usage in simulated autopsy settings, emphasizing safety, hygiene, and infection control.
Understand Ethical Practices and Legal Standards: Analyze case studies to identify ethical challenges, legal considerations, and privacy issues relevant to autopsy procedures and the role of the autopsy assistant.
Assist with Morgue and Body Preparation: Gain skills in morgue protocols, including body storage, transportation, and preparation for autopsy, while ensuring respect for the deceased.
Demonstrate Effective Communication Skills: Develop professional communication techniques in working with forensic pathologists,medical specialists, and investigators, including accurately and appropriately reporting findings and conveying important observations during the autopsy process.
Work with Simulated Autopsy Scenarios: Apply knowledge of autopsy procedures through simulations that replicate real-life autopsy situations, including autopsies of deaths under varying types of investigation and conditions.
