JAPA-212 Intermediate Japanese IICredits 4 / 4 Contact Hours Pre-requisite: Placement into ACRD-090, ACRD-091 or ACRD-092, completion of ELAP-110 with a minimum grade of 2.0, or successful completion of ACRD-080; Successful completion of JAPA-211 JAPA-212 is the second course of a two-semester sequence in intermediate Japanese. Students are introduced to more complex grammatical structures and expressions through oral and written practice. Practical communication skills (speaking, reading, writing, and listening comprehension) are emphasized. The hiragana & katakana syllabaries and the 200 kanji from prior courses are reinforced, plus about 100 more kanji characters are introduced. Japanese cultural awareness is expanded through presentations, online resources, and when possible, interactions with native speakers of Japanese.
Course Outcomes 1. Construct and use complex sentences in the target language with accuracy in appropriate contexts. [Measured on speaking/listening & written portions of 6 Chapter Tests, My Japanese Language Adventure Presentation, and Final Exam.]
2. Read and write sentences, paragraphs, and stories accurately, using hiragana, katakana, and approximately 300 kanji. [Measured on 6 Chapter Tests, 8 Quizzes, My Japanese Language Adventure Presentation, and Final Exam.]
3. Describe current, ongoing, past, and future events in the target language, and use such descriptions to modify nouns. [Measured on 6 Chapter Tests, My Japanese Language Adventure Presentation, and Final Exam.]
4. Demonstrate proficiency in the target language to perform real-world tasks such as reporting a crime/offense, making reservations, requesting/giving directions, visiting someone’s home, using honorific/humble language in the appropriate contexts, describing giving/receiving with proper in-group/out-group attribution, discussing hearsay, apparent or conditional states/activities, and using passive & causative verb tenses, in the target language. 5. Further enhance and demonstrate their cultural competence by describing giving/receiving with proper in-group/out-group attribution, and using passive & causative verb tenses and honorific/humble language in the appropriate contexts.
