JAPA-211 Intermediate JapaneseCredits 4 / 4 Contact Hours Pre-requisite: Placement into ACRD-090, ACRD-091 or ACRD-092, completion of ELAP-110 with a minimum grade of 2.0, or successful completion of ACRD-080; JAPA-112 JAPA-211 is the first course of a two-semester sequence in intermediate Japanese. Students are introduced to more complex grammatical structures and vocabulary through oral and written practice. Practical communication skills (speaking, reading, writing, and listening comprehension) are emphasized. Approximately 150 kanji characters are introduced. Japanese cultural topics are explored in more depth.
Course Outcomes 1. Construct and use complex sentences in the target language with accuracy. [Measured on speaking/listening & written portions of 6 Chapter Tests, Favorite Things Presentation, and Final Exam.]
2. Read and write sentences and short paragraphs accurately, using hiragana, katakana, and approximately 200 kanji. [Measured on 6 Chapter Tests, 7 Quizzes, Favorite Things Presentation, and Final Exam.]
3. Describe current, ongoing, past, and future events in the target language. [Measured on 6 Chapter Tests, 7 Quizzes, Favorite Things Presentation, and Final Exam.]
4. Demonstrate proficiency in the target language to perform real-world tasks such as getting medical attention, describing giving/receiving with proper in-group/out-group attribution, using honorific/humble language in the appropriate contexts, discussing possible or conditional states or activities, etc. in the target language. [Measured on 6 Chapter Tests, 7 Quizzes, Favorite Things Presentation, and Final Exam.]
5. Further enhance and demonstrate their cultural competence by describing giving/receiving with proper in-group/out-group attribution, and by using honorific/humble language in the appropriate contexts. [Measured on 6 Chapter Tests, Favorite Things Presentation, and Final Exam.]
