JAPA-112 Beginning Japanese II

Pre-requisite: Placement into ACRD-090, ACRD-091 or ACRD-092, completion of ELAP-110 with a minimum grade of 2.0, or successful completion of ACRD-080; JAPA 111  
JAPA-112 is the second course of a two-semester sequence in beginning Japanese. Students expand their knowledge of the language through oral & written practice. Practical communication skills (speaking, reading, writing, and listening comprehension) are emphasized. The hiragana & katakana syllabaries and the 40+ kanji from JAPA111 are reinforced, plus 72 kanji characters are introduced. Japanese cultural awareness is expanded through presentations and online resources.

Course Outcomes
1.  Demonstrate understanding of short paragraph-length utterances in the target language on a number of topics. [Measured on speaking/listening portions of 5 Chapter Tests and a Final Exam.]

2.  Accurately construct and use compound sentences in the target language. [Measured on 5 Chapter Tests, Dream Trip Presentation, and Final Exam.]

3.  Accurately use verbs and adjectives in non-past & past tenses in the target language. [Measured on 4 Chapter Tests. 6 Discussions, and a Final Exam.]

4.  Distinguish the differences between -na and -i adjectives and use them appropriately in real-world scenarios in the target language. [Measured on 5 Chapter Tests. 3 Discussions, and a Final Exam.]

5.  Use large numbers (100+) correctly and in real-world scenarios in the target language. [Measured on 2 Chapter Tests. Dream Trip Presentation, and Final Exam.]

6.  Read and write approx. 100 kanji characters accurately, alone and in combination with other characters. [Measured on 6 Quizzes, Dream Trip Presentation, and Final Exam.]

7. Describe and compare places, things, people, characteristics, conditions, problems, etc. in the target language. [Measured on 1 Chapter Test, Dream Trip Presentation, and Final Exam.]

8. Conjugate verbs in formal and informal forms, using them correctly to modify nouns, create noun phrases, & discuss purposes. [Measured on 4 Chapter Tests, Dream Trip Presentation, and Final Exam.]

9. Ask/tell about personal preferences and plans in the target language. [Measured on 3 Chapter Tests, Dream Trip Presentation, and Final Exam.]

10. Demonstrate proficiency in the target language to perform real-world tasks such as making requests; asking for, granting, & denying permission; discussing ongoing states/activities, etc. [Measured on 5 Chapter Tests, Dream Trip Presentation, and Final Exam.]

11.  Ask and answer complex questions about one’s own culture and that of cultures related to the target language. [Measured in 6 Discussions and Final Exam.]
