JAPA-111 Beginning Japanese

Credits 4 / 4 Contact Hours
Pre-requisite: Placement into ACRD-090, ACRD-091 or ACRD-092, completion of ELAP-110 with a minimum grade of 2.0, or successful completion of ACRD-080. 
JAPA-111 is the first course of a two-semester sequence in beginning Japanese. Students are introduced to the basic structure of the language through oral & written practice. Practical communication skills (speaking, reading, writing, and listening comprehension) are emphasized. Hiragana & katakana syllabaries are introduced, plus about 50 kanji characters are introduced. Japanese culture is introduced through presentations and online resources.

Course Outcomes
1.  Pronounce and comprehend basic Japanese sentences with accuracy. [Measured on speaking/listening portions of 5 Chapter Tests and a Final Exam.]

2.  Use basic Japanese vocabulary and grammatical structures correctly, in written and spoken form. [Measured on 5 Chapter Tests, 15 Quizzes, and a Final Exam.] 

3.  Accurately use several of the fundamental structures of Japanese grammar. [Measured on 5 Chapter Tests. 8 Discussions, and a Final Exam.]

4.  Read and write words and phrases accurately using the hiragana and katakana syllabaries. [Measured on 8 Quizzes, Travel Presentation, and Final Exam.]

5.  Read and write 40 kanji characters accurately, alone and in combination with other characters. [Measured on 7 Quizzes, Travel Presentation, and Final Exam.]

6.  Enhance their cultural competence and demonstrate how it relates to language usage. [Measured on 8 Quizzes, Oral Presentation, Travel Presentation, and Final Exam.]
