ENGL-205 Creative Writing

Credits 3 / 3 Contact Hours
Pre-requisite: Placement into ACRD-090, ACRD-091 or ACRD-092, completion of ELAP-110 with a minimum grade of 2.0, or successful completion of ACRD-080; Successful completion of ENGL-101  or ENGL-103  with a grade of 2.0 or higher.
In this course, students will explore the fundamentals of creative writing in fiction and poetry (and possibly other genres that may include drama, creative nonfiction, graphic short fiction, social media, and screenplays), focusing on
essential elements such as character development, dialogue, plot structure, conflict, theme, imagery, and symbolism. Students will participate in writing exercises, peer workshops, and discussions of assigned texts to gain a solid
foundation in the craft of writing.

Course Outcomes
1. Analyze various literary techniques used in fiction, poetry and other creative writing genres
2. Create original works of fiction and poetry (and possibly other genres) that demonstrate a clear understanding of genre conventions
3. Engage in the writing process through pre-writing, drafting, revising, and editing
4. Cull from a collection of pieces, selecting strongest work for a final portfolio
5. Reflect on writing processes and personal development as a creative writer
6. Engage effectively in a community of creative writers
