FRSC-161 Occupational SafetyCredits 3 / 3 Contact Hours Pre-requisite: Placement into ACRD-090, ACRD-091 or ACRD-092, completion of ELAP-110 with a minimum grade of 2.0, or successful completion of ACRD-080. This course equips students with the practical knowledge and skills needed to ensure a safe working environment in compliance with Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). Students will learn to apply OSHA guidelines to a range of workplace hazards, including walking/working surfaces, fire safety, electrical safety, personal protective equipment (PPE), blood-borne pathogens, hazardous chemicals, infection control, and ergonomic safety. Emphasis is placed on the implementation of OSHA's safety protocols for emergency action planning, safe driving, workplace violence prevention, and the handling of biological agents. Students will also be instructed on how to handle personal
information in regard to the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA). Through case studies, practical demonstrations, and hands-on exercises, students will gain the tools necessary to mitigate risks and promote safety within diverse workplace settings.

Course Outcomes 1. Apply OSHA Walking/Working Surface Safety Guidelines: Implement safe practices to reduce slip, trip, and fall hazards in the workplace.
2. Apply Emergency Action Plan Guidelines: Demonstrate proper exit route procedures and fire safety measures, ensuring effective response during emergencies.
3. Apply Electrocution Safety Guidelines: Identify and mitigate risks related to electrical hazards in the workplace, following OSHA's electrocution prevention guidelines.
4. Demonstrate Proper Use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): Accurately select, use, and maintain appropriate PPE for various workplace hazards.
5. Implement Blood-Borne Pathogen Safety Protocols: Apply OSHA guidelines for protecting workers from blood-borne pathogen exposure through safe practices and equipment.
6. Follow Hazard Communication and Chemical Safety Guidelines: Effectively communicate chemical hazards in the workplace and apply proper safety handling techniques.
7. Demonstrate Infection Control and Prevention Methods: Implement strategies to control the spread of infections in the workplace, based on OSHA infection control standards.
8. Apply Ergonomic Safety Methods: Use ergonomic principles to reduce strain and injury risk for workers, including proper ergonomic care during patient handling.
9. Follow Safe Driving Guidelines: Implement safe driving practices in the workplace, adhering to OSHA safety recommendations for motor vehicle operations.
10. Prevent Workplace Violence: Identify and mitigate risks related to workplace violence through preventative measures and proper training.
11. Handle Biological Agents Safely: Follow OSHA special handling guidelines to safely work with biological agents and reduce the risk of contamination or exposure.
12. Apply HIPPA guidelines regarding personal medical information: Follow the legal requirements for handling personal information in regard to the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA).
