DHYG-143 Introduction to PeriodontologyCredits 1 / 1 Contact Hours Pre-requisite: Coordinator’s signature required to register in this course; Program Eligibility Requirements; Placement into College Level Reading, completion of ELAP-120 with a 2.0 or higher, or successful completion of ACRD-090, ACRD-091 or ACRD-092; DHYG 102 , DHYG 110 , DHYG 113 , DHYG 114 , DHYG 115 , DHYG 118 and DHYG 121 . This course is an introductory evidence-based study of the etiology and the classification of periodontal diseases. This course will provide the student with the necessary skill information for clinical patients in the second semester.

Course Outcomes Core Course Objective 1: Demonstrate an understanding of the periodontium in health and disease states necessary to lay a foundation for beginning dental hygiene practice.
Core Course Objective 2: Utilize introductory concepts in the assessment, diagnosis, treatment planning, implementation, and evaluation of the periodontium for beginning dental hygiene practice.
Core Course Objective 3: Utilize interpersonal and communication skills to effectively interact with diverse population groups and other members of the health care team.
