WELD-262 Advanced Multi-Process Pipe Welding

Credits 4 / 6 Contact Hours
Pre-requisite: Placement into ACRD-080; WELD-260; and WELD-261 or WELD-272.
Students will further develop their Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW), Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW), and Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (GTAW) skills by learning the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) Section IX & American Welding Society (AWS) D1.1 codes and standards and applying them to welds being performed. Students will create open root groove welds on carbon steel pipe using SMAW, GMAW, and GTAW. All welding will be performed in 2G, 5G, and 6G positions. Students
will be tested to meet qualification requirements for AWS D1.1 Prequalified Welding Procedure Specifications (WPS).

Course Outcomes
Choose the proper PPE to safely use the equipment needed for the SMAW process.

  • Identify any safety precautions that may be necessary for this process.
  • Determine what PPE is required for this process.

  • Determine what helmet shade setting is needed for this process.

Perform safety inspection of the equipment and accessories for operation.

  • Inspect power supply for defects.
  • Inspect leads and connections for defects.

  • Inspect booth for proper function.

Set up equipment properly to perform a SMAW root and fill weld in the required position.

  • Identify the proper filler material for the process.
  • Determine the best settings for the base metal used.

  • Identify the proper polarity for the process.

Choose the proper consumables for the material being welded.

  • Identify the correct filler material for the root pass on the provided base metal.
  • Identify the correct filler metal for the fill passes for the provided base metal.

  • Identify the correct collet, collet body, and gas cup to match the tungsten when needed.

Prepare material for welding.

  • Cut the material to size.
  • Prepare the proper bevel and root face on the plate.

  • Set the proper root opening and tack in place.

Make open root groove weld in 2G position on sch. 40 pipe.

  • Prepare tacks for proper tie in.
  • Run root pass following WPS requirements.

  • Run remaining fill passes to WPS specifications.

Make open root groove weld in 5G position on sch. 40 pipe.

  • Prepare tacks for proper tie in.
  • Run root pass following WPS requirements.

  • Run remaining fill passes to WPS specifications.

Make open root groove weld in 6G position on sch. 80 pipe.

  • Prepare tacks for proper tie in.
  • Run root pass following WPS requirements.

  • Run remaining fill passes to WPS specifications.

Set up equipment to perform a GTAW root with GMAW fill weld in the required position.

  • Identify the proper filler material for the process.
  • Determine the best settings for the base metal used.

  • Identify the proper polarity for the process.

Make open root groove weld in 5G position on sch. 40 pipe.

  • Prepare tacks for proper tie in.
  • Run root pass following WPS requirements.

  • Run remaining fill passes to WPS specifications.

Make open root groove weld in position of choice on sch. 80 pipe.

  • Prepare tacks for proper tie in.
  • Run root pass following WPS requirements.

  • Run remaining fill passes to WPS specifications.
