WELD-261 Gas Tungsten Arc Welding IICredits 2 / 3 Contact Hours Pre-requisite: Placement into ACRD-080; WELD 168 . Students will further develop their Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (GTAW) skills by learning the American Welding Society (AWS) codes and standards and applying them to welds being performed. Students will build open root groove welds using selected filler rods on carbon steel plate in 2G, 3G, and 4G positions. Students will be tested to meet qualification requirements for AWS D1.1 Prequalified Welding Procedure Specifications (WPS).
Course Outcomes Choose the proper PPE to safely use the equipment needed for the SMAW process.
Perform safety inspection of the equipment and accessories for operation.
Set up equipment properly to perform a GTAW root and fill weld in the required position.
Prepare material for welding.
- Identify the material size.
-
Determine the proper bevel angle on the plate.
-
Determine the proper root face on the plate.
-
Determine the proper root opening and tack in place.
Make open root groove weld in 2G, 3G, and 4G positions on 1/4” plate.
- Identify how to prepare tacks for proper tie in.
-
Determine the proper body position, visual factors, and material preparation for joint root following WPS requirements.
-
Determine the proper body position, visual factors, and material preparation for remaining fill passes following WPS requirements.
Read and follow a welding procedure specification document (WPS).
Make open root groove weld in 2G, 3G, and 4G positions on 3/8” plate.
- Prepare tacks for proper tie in.
-
Determine the proper body position, visual factors, and material preparation for joint root following WPS requirements.
-
Determine the proper body position, visual factors, and material preparation for remaining fill passes following WPS requirements.
Final exam, make an open root groove weld on 3/8” plate in the position of choice.
