WELD-260 Shielded Metal Arc Welding II

Credits 2 / 3 Contact Hours
Pre-requisite: Placement into ACRD-080; WELD-166.
Students will further develop their Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW) skills by learning the American Welding Society (AWS) codes and standards and applying them to welds being performed. Students will build open root groove welds using multiple SMAW electrodes on carbon steel plate in the 2G, 3G, and 4G positions. Students will be tested to meet qualification requirements for AWS D1.1 Prequalified Welding Procedure Specifications (WPS).

Course Outcomes
Choose the proper PPE to safely use the equipment needed for the SMAW process.

  • Identify any safety precautions that may be necessary for this process.
  • Determine what PPE is required for this process.

  • Determine what helmet shade setting is needed for this process.

Perform safety inspection of the equipment and accessories for operation.

  • Inspect power supply for defects.
  • Inspect leads and connections for defects.

  • Inspect booth for proper function.

Set up equipment properly to perform a SMAW root and fill weld in the required position.

  • Identify the proper filler material for the process.
  • Determine the best parameters for the base metal used.

  • Identify the proper polarity for the process.

Prepare material for welding.

  • Identify the material size.
  • Determine the proper bevel angle on the plate.

  • Determine the proper root face on the plate.

  • Determine the proper root opening and tack in place.

Make open root groove weld in 2G, 3G, and 4G positions on 1/4” plate.

  • Identify how to prepare tacks for proper tie in.
  • Determine the proper body position, visual factors, and material preparation for joint root following WPS requirements.

  • Determine the proper body position, visual factors, and material preparation for remaining fill passes following WPS requirements.

Read and follow a welding procedure specification document (WPS).

  • Realize the importance of following a procedure.
  • Determine the essential variables within the procedure.

  • Determine if the procedure is being properly followed.

Make open root groove weld in 2G, 3G, and 4G positions on 3/8” plate.

  • Prepare tacks for proper tie in.
  • Determine the proper body position, visual factors, and material preparation for joint root following WPS requirements.

  • Determine the proper body position, visual factors, and material preparation for remaining fill passes following WPS requirements.

Final exam, make an open root groove weld on 3/8” plate in the position of choice.

  • Prepare tacks for proper tie in.
  • Run root pass following WPS requirements.

  • Run remaining fill passes to WPS specifications.
