SURG-213 Applied Surgical Techniques IV

Credits 4 / 4 Contact Hours
Pre-requisite: Placement into College Level Reading, completion of ELAP-120 with a 2.0 or higher, or successful completion of ACRD-090, ACRD-091 or ACRD-092; SURG-100, SURG-101, SURG-102, SURG-103 SURG-110, SURG-115, SURG-150, SURG-200 and SURG-210. Co-requisite: SURG-151 and SURG-212.
SURG-213 is the continuation of SURG-212 and continues a clinical session at a hospital. The course provides opportunities for the application of theory and clinical skills in basic and advanced surgical procedures and surgical specialty areas. 

Course Outcomes
A. Prepare the surgical suite, the instruments, the team members, and themselves for a surgical procedure.

B. Pass the surgical instruments required during the course of the procedure, maintaining accurate counts and surgical asepsis at all times.

C. Tear down, clean, and prepare two surgical suites for the next case.

D. Assemble all the surgical equipment needed for the surgery as determined by the type of procedure within 20 minutes.

E. Correctly set up the back table and mayo stand for a general surgical case within 20 minutes.

F. Correctly pass instruments to the surgeon.

G. Anticipate the needs of the surgeon.

H. Identify and correct breaks in sterile technique.

I. Identify types of sponges used during procedures.

J. Correctly prepare sponges for surgical procedures.

K. Count sponges, needles and/or instruments correctly with the circulating nurse at the proper times throughout the operative procedure.

L. Open and prepare suture.

M. Correctly pass suture material to the surgeon.

N. Perform the duties and responsibilities of a circulating nurse (while under supervision). 

O. List the steps of the surgical procedure in sequential order.

P. Identify surgical anatomy, physiology, and pathology.

Q. Discuss common complications of surgical procedures.

R. Based on specific surgical scenarios, identify safety concerns and required instrumentation.

S. Demonstrate the handling and care of the surgical laser.

T. Based on surgical procedures identified, demonstrate the use, functions, and care of a scope and camera.

U. Based on surgical scenarios and medicines provided, draw up the appropriate medicine to pass to the surgeon.
