SURG-212 Applied Surgical Techniques IIICredits 4 / 4 Contact Hours Pre-requisite: Placement into College Level Reading, completion of ELAP-120 with a 2.0 or higher, or successful completion of ACRD-090, ACRD-091 or ACRD-092; SURG-100, SURG-101, SURG-102, SURG-103 SURG-110, SURG-115, SURG-150, SURG-200 and SURG-210. Co-requisite: SURG-151 and SURG-213. Students are assigned to hospitals and are provided with the opportunities to apply theory and clinical skills in basic and advanced surgical procedures and specialty areas.
Course Outcomes A. Given surgical scenarios, assemble all the surgical equipment needed for the surgery procedure within 20 minutes.
B. Set up the back table and mayo stand correctly for a general surgical case within 20 minutes.
C. Given skill lab scenarios, provide the instruments and equipment requested by the surgeon.
D. Given skill lab scenarios, anticipate the needs of the surgeon with 100% accuracy.
E. Identify and correct breaks in sterile technique.
F. Identify types of sponges used during procedures.
G. Correctly prepare sponges for surgical procedures.
H. Count sponges, needles and/or instruments correctly with the circulating nurse at the proper times throughout the operative procedure.
I. Open and prepare suture.
J. Correctly pass suture material to the surgeon.
K. Identify, verbalize, and perform the duties and responsibilities of the circulating nurse with supervision, assisting in the circulating role and all aspects of perioperative case management.
L. Perform the steps of the surgical procedure in sequential order.
M. Identify anatomy, physiology, and pathology based on the surgical procedure performed.
N. Identify common complications of surgical procedures.
O. Discuss safety concerns and instrumentation related to surgical procedures.
P. Demonstrate the handling and care of a laser.
Q. Based on procedures identified, demonstrate the use, functions, and care of a scope and camera.
R. Based on surgical scenarios and medicines provided, draw up the appropriate medicine to pass to the surgeon.
S. Prepare the surgical suite, the instruments, the team members, and self for a surgical procedure.
T. Provide instruments required during the course of a surgical procedure while maintaining accurate counts and surgical asepsis at all times.
U. Tear down, clean, and prepare two surgical suites for the next case.
V. Transfer patients to post operative care unit (PACU).
