SURG-211 Applied Surgical Techniques IICredits 3 / 3 Contact Hours Pre-requisite: Placement into College Level Reading, completion of ELAP-120 with a 2.0 or higher, or successful completion of ACRD-090, ACRD-091 or ACRD-092; SURG-100, SURG-101, SURG-102, SURG-103 and SURG-110. Co-requisite: SURG-115, SURG-150, SURG-200 and SURG-210. This course prepares students for actual operating room experience through application of theory and clinical skills in mock surgical procedures. Basic surgical procedures will be presented, with some hands-on experience utilizing surgical simulators, along with additional competencies pertaining to circulating duties, disinfection, and sterilization.
Course Outcomes A. Given a procedure type, assemble all the surgical equipment needed for the surgery in less than 30 minutes.
B. Complete all steps of donning a sterile gown and gloves without contamination of both self and others.
C. Correct any breaks in sterile technique.
D. Position, drape, and prep the patient according to the surgical procedure being done.
E. Open containers without contamination.
F. Pour solutions into containers without contamination.
G. Set up the back table and mayo stand in less than 30 minutes.
H. Identify the instrument requested by the instructor.
I. Pass instruments safely and correctly to instructor.
J. Anticipate the needs of the instructor.
K. Identify types of sponges that will be used during surgical procedure.
L. Prepare and verify sponges, needles, blades, and instruments correctly for procedure.
M. Prepare suture materials for surgery.
N. Pass suture materials to instructor with 100% accuracy.
O. Prepare wound drains for use by instructor.
P. Explain the rationale for use of wound drains.
Q. Identify the phases of repair as stated in text.
R. Assist in all phases of cleaning the operating room.
S. Given a list of surgical incisions, identify the surgical procedures to accompany the incision.
T. Given anesthesia types, explain the indications for use of each, contraindications, related medications, and role of surgical technologist.
U. Identify medications.
V. Given surgical scenarios, draw up the amount of medication to be used.
W. Pass patient medication to the surgeon.
