SURG-210 Applied Surgical Techniques I

Credits 2 / 2 Contact Hours
Pre-requisite: Placement into College Level Reading, completion of ELAP-120 with a 2.0 or higher, or successful completion of ACRD-090, ACRD-091 or ACRD-092; SURG-100, SURG-101, SURG-102, SURG-103 and SURG-110. Co-requisite: SURG-115, SURG-150, SURG-200 and SURG-211.
This course covers the application of theory in the use of surgical supplies and equipment to prepare students to scrub in for actual surgical procedures.

Course Outcomes
A. Identify organizational structures of a hospital and an operating room suite.

B. Identify the types and functions of basic operating room equipment.

C. Demonstrate the assembly and use of operating room equipment.

D. Identify the accessory equipment and functions of specific surgical procedures.

E. Demonstrate the assembly and use of accessory equipment.

F. Identify specialty equipment by name and use.

G. List techniques and types of equipment used for disinfection and sterilization.

H. Explain what is meant by minimal sterilization parameters.

I. Compare and contrast different types of sterility and bacteriologic indicators.

J. Demonstrate the surgical scrub, incorporating both brush-stroke and timed methods.

K. Complete open and closed methods of gowning and gloving procedures for both self and others.

L. Set-up surgical supplies and instruments according to specific surgical procedures within the operating room suite.

M. State principles of aseptic technique.

N. Use aseptic technique principles before, during, and after surgery.

O. Describe the use, handling, and assembly of drains and catheters before, during, and after surgery.

P. Use drains and catheters before, during, and after surgery.

Q. Follow containment and labeling practices of specimens.

R. Demonstrate principles of surgical positioning, padding, and equipment used.

S. Following surgical procedure, demonstrate principles of draping a sterile field.

T. List the classes, function, and names of basic instruments.

U. Demonstrate care, handling, and assembly of basic instruments.

V. Identify suture materials.

W. Follow the aseptic technique in suture handling and/or stapling equipment.

X. Identify, describe, and demonstrate safe handling, loading, and containment of surgical needles before, during, and after a procedure.

Y. Assemble, clean, and care for laparoscopy instruments, scopes, and cameras.

Z. State safety procedures when using lasers.

AA. Perform skin preps and urinary catheterization.

AB. Clean operating room suite between surgical procedures.

AC. Demonstrate how to count sponges, sharps, and instruments.
