SURG-200 Surgical Specialty/Prof PrepCredits 2 / 2 Contact Hours Pre-requisite: Placement into College Level Reading, completion of ELAP-120 with a 2.0 or higher, or successful completion of ACRD-090, ACRD-091 or ACRD-092; SURG-100, SURG-101, SURG-102, SURG-103 and SURG-110. Co-requisite: SURG-115, SURG-150, SURG-210 and SURG-211. This course focuses on preparing the student for life-long learning. Emphasis will be placed on advanced technologies, the future of tele-surgery, the operating room ten years out, and advances in specialty surgeries. Preparation for the national
certification exam will be provided in a review of core components.
Course Outcomes A. Explain the following:
- The anatomical structures of various surgical approaches.
- The incisional locations for various surgeries.
- Surgical procedures, sequencing, possible surgical complications, instrumentation, and the scope of practice of health care providers.
- The uses and applications of various medications.
- The anatomy and physiology pertinent to the specific surgical patient.
- The microbiology component concerning the surgical patient and department.
- The basic and specialty surgical procedures performed in the operating room.
- Cognitive, Psychomotor, and Afferent Learning Domains as they relate to the surgical technology.
- The biomedical sciences: computers, physics, electricity, and robotics.
B. Define the relevant medical terminology used in the surgical setting.
C. Discuss the peri-operative experience for the surgical patient, undergoing both general and specialty surgical procedures, including indications for surgery, the actual procedure, and the post-operative course.
D. Discuss career options and advancements for Certified Surgical Technologists.
E. Explain the purposes and functions of the AST, ARC-STSA, CAAHEP, and NBSTSA.
F. Prepare a complete professional education portfolio.
G. Complete the NBSTSA Practice Board Exam.
H. Complete an application for national board certification.
I. Through role playing, discuss and demonstrate appropriate characteristics as they relate to the following: professional management, employability skills, communication skills, and teamwork.
