SURG-151 Advanced Surgical ProceduresCredits 6 / 6 Contact Hours Pre-requisite: Placement into College Level Reading, completion of ELAP-120 with a 2.0 or higher, or successful completion of ACRD-090, ACRD-091 or ACRD-092; SURG-100, SURG-101, SURG-102, SURG-103, SURG-110, SURG-115, SURG-150, SURG-200 and SURG-210. Co-requisite: SURG-212 and SURG-213. This course introduces the student to intermediate and advanced surgical procedures with a primary focus on the sequential steps involved in these procedures, higher difficulty cases, and specialized instrumentation. Surgical anatomy, physiology, and pathophysiology will be addressed. The biomedical sciences will also be addressed: robotics, physics, computers, and electricity.
Course Outcomes A. Discuss disease pathologies, the relevant anatomy/physiology, and the expected outcomes of surgical procedures as interventions in those same pathologies for general, thoracic, vascular, plastic, EENT (eye, ear, nose, throat), gynecologic, genitourinary, neurologic, and orthopedic general categories of surgeries.
B. Analyze the preoperative diagnostic tests and preoperative preparation required for representative examples general, thoracic, vascular, plastic, EENT (eye, ear, nose, throat), gynecologic, genitourinary, neurologic, and orthopedic general surgical categories.
C. Demonstrate interventions used in common surgical complication scenarios.
D. Critique roles and anticipatory skills for purposes of advanced skill levels.
E. List typical operative sequencing for a variety of surgical procedures in general, thoracic, vascular, plastic, EENT (eye, ear, nose, throat), gynecologic, genitourinary, neurologic, and orthopedic following surgical categories.
F. Identify by name and function, surgical instrumentation and typical specialty equipment required in specific surgical specialty procedures including but not limited to flexible fiberoptic exams, obstetrical deliveries, organ tissue harvests, autopsy, and emergency trauma.
