SURG-115 Surgical PharmocologyCredits 2 / 2 Contact Hours Pre-requisite: Placement into College Level Reading, completion of ELAP-120 with a 2.0 or higher, or successful completion of ACRD-090, ACRD-091 or ACRD-092; SURG-100, SURG-101, SURG-102, SURG-103 and SURG-110. Co-requisite: SURG-150, SURG-200, SURG-210 and SURG-211. This course introduces the student to basic types of anesthesia, anesthesia agents, indications and contraindications of medications, and the calculations of maximum dosages of various drugs. The student will become familiar with a wide array of pharmacological agents specifically related to the peri-operative care being provided for the surgical patient.
Course Outcomes A. Explain the uses of a variety of intra-operative medications.
B. Discuss the pre-anesthetic preparation of the patient.
C. Perform calculations utilizing metric equivalents to maximum dosages for patients in the operating room.
D. List the commonly used inhalation and induction anesthetic agents.
E. Use the America Surgical Association system, classify patient risk factors.
F. Classify, and then describe usage of, a variety of drugs used in surgery.
G. Describe the major risks and/or complications for the major forms of anesthesia.
H. Differentiate the different forms of anesthesia.
I. Compare and contrast the various routes of drug administration.
J. Summarize alternative (nontraditional/cultural) forms of anesthesia.
