SURG-103 Sterile Processing Externship

Credits 5 / 5 Contact Hours
Pre-requisite: Placement into College Level Reading, completion of ELAP-120 with a 2.0 or higher, or successful completion of ACRD-090, ACRD-091 or ACRD-092; SURG-101 and SURG-102. Pre- or co-requisite: BIOL-152 and ENGL-101.
This course prepares individuals to function competently in the Sterile Processing Department in hospitals. This course includes discussion of professional work-place skills, resume writing, and interviewing skills, as well as on-the-job training and hands-on practice in a hospital. Successful completion of the course qualifies a student to take the National Certification Examination for Sterile Processing and Distribution. 

Course Outcomes
  1.  Apply knowledge of the functions and responsibilities of the Sterile Processing Department.
  2. Exhibit the behavior of a professional Sterile Processing Technician through appearance, manner, communication, work ethic, integrity, and skill set.
  3. Demonstrate organizational skills in the clinical setting by completing work assignments in a timely manner.
  4. Perform skills in the clinical setting as required of a sterile processing technician.
  5. Using facility decontamination and disinfection equipment, perform these procedures for a variety of cases.
  6. Arrange and assemble a variety of surgical instrument sets and procedure trays.
  7. Package items for sterilization.
  8. Load and operate sterilization equipment.
  9. Assemble Surgical Case Carts.
  10. Provide disinfected and well-maintained patient care equipment to patients.
  11. Demonstrate knowledge of regulatory standards by completing HIPAA and OSHA required training with 80% or better, and apply these standards in the workplace.
  12. Demonstrate safety, security, patient rights and confidentiality in the clinical setting as regulated by MIOSHA, Bloodborne Pathogen Standard, and the Medical Waste Act, and mandated in the facility policy.
  13. Demonstrate effective interpersonal communication with instructors, hospital department employees, and preceptor, as assessed by the language used, how it is said, and the non-verbal messages sent through tone of voice, facial expressions, gestures, and body language.
  14. Demonstrate initiative and excellent employability skills by attending and being punctual for all scheduled clinical hours, addressing clinical personnel professionally, completing skills as instructed, and working as part of a team.
  15. Demonstrate and apply infection control practices in the clinical setting.
