SURG-103 Sterile Processing ExternshipCredits 5 / 5 Contact Hours Pre-requisite: Placement into College Level Reading, completion of ELAP-120 with a 2.0 or higher, or successful completion of ACRD-090, ACRD-091 or ACRD-092; SURG-101 and SURG-102. Pre- or co-requisite: BIOL-152 and ENGL-101. This course prepares individuals to function competently in the Sterile Processing Department in hospitals. This course includes discussion of professional work-place skills, resume writing, and interviewing skills, as well as on-the-job training and hands-on practice in a hospital. Successful completion of the course qualifies a student to take the National Certification Examination for Sterile Processing and Distribution.
Course Outcomes
- Apply knowledge of the functions and responsibilities of the Sterile Processing Department.
- Exhibit the behavior of a professional Sterile Processing Technician through appearance, manner, communication, work ethic, integrity, and skill set.
- Demonstrate organizational skills in the clinical setting by completing work assignments in a timely manner.
- Perform skills in the clinical setting as required of a sterile processing technician.
- Using facility decontamination and disinfection equipment, perform these procedures for a variety of cases.
- Arrange and assemble a variety of surgical instrument sets and procedure trays.
- Package items for sterilization.
- Load and operate sterilization equipment.
- Assemble Surgical Case Carts.
- Provide disinfected and well-maintained patient care equipment to patients.
- Demonstrate knowledge of regulatory standards by completing HIPAA and OSHA required training with 80% or better, and apply these standards in the workplace.
- Demonstrate safety, security, patient rights and confidentiality in the clinical setting as regulated by MIOSHA, Bloodborne Pathogen Standard, and the Medical Waste Act, and mandated in the facility policy.
- Demonstrate effective interpersonal communication with instructors, hospital department employees, and preceptor, as assessed by the language used, how it is said, and the non-verbal messages sent through tone of voice, facial expressions, gestures, and body language.
- Demonstrate initiative and excellent employability skills by attending and being punctual for all scheduled clinical hours, addressing clinical personnel professionally, completing skills as instructed, and working as part of a team.
- Demonstrate and apply infection control practices in the clinical setting.
