SURG-101 Surgical AsepsisCredits 2 / 2 Contact Hours Pre-requisite: Placement into College Level Reading, completion of ELAP-120 with a 2.0 or higher, or successful completion of ACRD-090, ACRD-091 or ACRD-092. Co-requisite: SURG-102. Pre- or co-requisites: BIOL-151, AHLT-102 and HEAL-125. This course defines and describes pathogenic microorganisms and the causes and prevention of infection in the hospital. The student will be introduced to sterilization, disinfection, and other methods of controlling microbial growth.
Course Outcomes A. Analyze the historical background in the field of microbiology.
B. Describe the fields of study of microbiology.
C. Describe at least two historical theories of microbiology.
D. Compare and contrast the structure and characteristics of different types of microorganisms.
E. Identify at least three conditions that affect the growth of microorganisms.
F. Compare and contrast relationships between the human host pathogenic and non-pathogenic microbes.
G. Define the infection process and the factors that enable pathogens to invade a host and cause disease.
H. List the most common causative agents of human infection.
I. Describe at least two methods for anti-microbial control.
