ACRD-092 Strategic Reading for Arts & HumanitiesCredits 3 / 3 Contact Hours Pre-requisite: Placement into ACRD-090 or successful completion of ACRD-080 or ELAP-110 with a minimum grade of 2.0. This course provides skills and strategies in critical reading and critical thinking specific to comprehending the Arts and Humanities text for college level topics and materials.
Course Outcomes 1. Apply appropriate reading strategies to activate prior knowledge, set purposes for reading and monitor comprehension for the structures of arts and humanities texts.
2. Cite specific textual evidence to support analysis of primary and secondary sources, connecting insights gained from specific details to an understanding of the text as a whole.
3. Determine two or more central ideas of a text and analyze their development over the course of the text, including how they interact and build on one another to provide an objective summary of the text.
4. Identify a complex set of ideas or sequence of events and explain how specific individuals, ideas, or events interact and develop over the course of the text.
5. Determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in a text, including figurative, connotative, and technical meanings; analyze the impact of specific word choices on meaning and tone, including words with multiple meanings.
6. Integrate multiple sources of information presented in diverse formats and media in order to address a question or proposed solutions.
7. Identify the effectiveness of the structure an author uses in his or her intent or argument, including whether the structure makes points clear, convincing, and engaging.
8. Compare and discuss the point of view of two or more authors for how they treat the same or similar topics including which details they include and emphasize in their respective accounts.
