PSYC-281 General Psychology

Pre-requisite: Placement into ACRD-090, ACRD-091 or ACRD-092, completion of ELAP-110 with a minimum grade of 2.0, or successful completion of ACRD-080. Recommended Co-requisite: PSYC-280 NOTE: Taking this course does not require registration into the General Psychology Lab, but it is recommended.
The scientific study of behavior and mental processes with special emphasis on research methods biological basis of behavior human development learning and cognition personality theories cultural environmental and interpersonal influences on behaviors abnormal development psychological disorders and therapeutic interventions.

Course Outcomes

Explain basic psychological terminology, concepts, and theories in psychology to explain behavior and mental processes
Explain the structures and functions of brain anatomy and their relationship to behavior.
Analyze the influences of nature, nurture, and situational factors on behaviors and mental processes.
Identify key characteristics of major content domains in psychology (e.g., cognition and learning, memory, developmental, biological, and sociocultural).
Recognize major historical events, theoretical perspectives, and figures in psychology and their link to trends in contemporary psychology.
Describe examples of relevant and practical applications of psychological principles to everyday life.
Demonstrate psychology information literacy
Interpret and explain basic psychological research
Describe how individual and sociocultural differences can influence the applicability/generalizability of research findings and theories.
Express ideas in written formats that reflect basic psychological concepts and principles.
