ACRD-080 Introduction to Reading for Academic Purposes

Credits 3 / 3 Contact Hours
Pre-requisite: Placement into ACRD-080 or completion of ACLT-074 with minimum grade of 3.0.
This course provides an introduction to comprehension skills and reading strategies when reading for academic purposes in a variety of college level topics.

Course Outcomes
1. Identify topic, stated main idea, implied main idea, or supporting details the author uses to make his/her point.
2. Determine the main ideas or conclusions of a text while summarizing basic concepts by paraphrasing them in simpler but still accurate terms to indicate clear relationships among the key details and ideas.
3. Apply appropriate reading strategies to activate prior knowledge, set purposes for reading and monitor comprehension for patterns of organization in a variety of college level reading topics.
4. Determine the meaning of words, key terms, and phrases as they are used in a text, including figurative, connotative, and technical meanings.
5. Locate an author’s main purpose or point of view on the topic and main point.
6. Analyze how a reading is structured, including how key sentences, paragraphs, and larger portions of the text contribute to the whole reading while demonstrating understanding of the information or ideas.
7. Analyze major and minor details to explain how they interact and develop over the course of the text.
8. Cite textual evidence to support analysis of what the text says explicitly as well as to support simple inferences drawn from the text.
9. Compare and discuss how concepts and ideas in the readings relate to themselves, to other readings and to the real world.
