STEM-199 Undergraduate Research Methods

Credits 2 / 2 Contact Hours
Pre-requisite: Placement into College Level Reading, completion of ELAP-120 with a 2.0 or higher, or successful completion of ACRD-090, ACRD-091 or ACRD-092. NOTE: Class is reserved for STEM Scholars program students only.
This course is an undergraduate introduction to research that is used by professionals working in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) careers.  Students will participate in scholarly research with faculty mentors. Students will be required to participate in an in-depth independent and collaborative inquiry into select STEM subjects.  Students will then present their findings independently to the Science and Mathematics Division faculty as a poster presentation.

Course Outcomes
  1. Students will explain what research is in their discipline.
  2. Students will be able to perform a literature review relevant to the research topic.
  3. Students will be able to design experiments, including appropriate controls with guidance.
  4. Students will be able to work in a team and independently.
  5. Students will be able to communicate their research and the background information with weekly updates and a final poster presentation.
  6. Students will be able to keep a laboratory notebook.
  7. Students will identify the importance of scientific ethics and act ethically.
  8. Students will know how to appropriately handle data, materials, and equipment.
