MUS.-180 Music Appreciation

Credits 3 / 3 Contact Hours
Pre-requisite: Placement into ACRD-090, ACRD-091 or ACRD-092, completion of ELAP-110 with a minimum grade of 2.0, or successful completion of ACRD-080. 
An introductory course intended to increase the students’ awareness of basic musical elements, instruments, concepts, and forms. The course includes a survey of composers, genres and historical periods of music developed primarily from Western European traditions from Medieval through modern times. Students will learn how to listen and write critically about music and performance, and to appreciate the aesthetics of music and the listening skills required to make aesthetic judgments.

 

 

Course Outcomes

  1. Identify, recognize and define the basic elements of music (i.e. timbre, melody, rhythm, harmony, texture) and the terms associated with them.
  2. Apply a growing knowledge and understanding of the elements of music to assess musical examples using developing critical listening skills.
  3. Identify and recognize the various instruments found in a band, orchestra and choral ensemble.
  4. Identify and recognize the basic forms of music (i.e. symphony, rondo, concerto, minuet and trio, sonata form, etc.) and discuss the connection between the development of music with the changing of society and culture.
  5. Identify and recognize music from the various historical eras (i.e. Medieval, Renaissance, Baroque, Classical, Romantic and 20th Century) and place them in their historical, cultural and social contexts.
  6. Discuss the elements of key musical examples from western music history and world cultures and traditions.
