ACRD-091 Strategic Reading for Social Sciences & BusinessCredits 3 / 3 Contact Hours Pre-requisite: Placement into ACRD-090 or successful completion of ACRD-080 or ELAP-110 with a minimum grade of 2.0. This course provides skills and strategies in critical reading and critical thinking specific to comprehending the complexities of social sciences and business texts for college level topics and materials.
Course Outcomes 1. Apply appropriate reading strategies to activate prior knowledge, set purposes for reading and monitor comprehension for structures of science and technology texts.
2. Explain a complex multistep procedure in the text such as experiments, taking measurements, or performing technical tasks; analyze the anticipated results based on explanations in the text.
3. Analyze how the text structures information or ideas into categories or hierarchies, demonstrating understanding of the information or ideas.
4. Determine the meaning of symbols, key terms, and other domain-specific words and phrases as they are used in specific scientific or technical context.
5. Cite specific textual evidence to support analysis of primary and secondary sources, connecting insights gained from specific details to an understanding of the text as a whole.
6. Determine two or more central ideas of a text and analyze their development over the course of the text, including how they interact and build on one another to provide an objective summary of the text.
7. Analyze the author’s purpose for providing an explanation, describing a procedure, or discussing an experiment in a text.
8. Integrate multiple sources of information presented in diverse formats and media in order to address a question or proposed solutions.
9. Compile information from a range of reading sources into a coherent understanding of a process, phenomenon, or concept, resolving conflicting information when possible through collaboration.
