ACCT-212 Data Analytics for Accounting & Business

Credits 2 / 2 Contact Hours
Pre-requisite: Placement into College Level Reading, completion of ELAP-120 with a 2.0 or higher, or successful completion of ACRD-090, ACRD-091 or ACRD-092. Pre- or co-requisite: ACCT-202.
ACCT-212 covers the analysis of data as it pertains to accounting and business professionals. The focuses include analytic techniques for decision making and the examination of “big data” involving accounting and business information. Hands-on experiences will develop skills with select analytic tools used in data analytics for accounting and business professionals.

Course Outcomes
  1. Students will understand how both accountants and business managers can benefit from using data analytics and be able to solve accounting and business-related problems using appropriate data modeling tools.
  2. Students will understand how data is collected, created, stored, and shared by technology and be able to identify and evaluate the veracity of sources of data for use in analysis.
  3. Students will understand how to use data mining techniques to discover fraud and anomalies in accounting and financial data for budgeting, planning, controlling and other accounting and business metrics.
  4. Students will be able to create visualizations of data to provide clear insights into associations, relationships, outliers and other data intimations related to accounting and business anomalies.
  5. Students will understand and be able to identify business risks and ethical issues related to data collection, storage, and use.
