PSYC-290 Psychology of Adolescence

Pre-requisite: Placement into ACRD-090, ACRD-091 or ACRD-092, completion of ELAP-110 with a minimum grade of 2.0, or successful completion of ACRD-080; PSYC-281  
Adolescent Psychology examines the physical, cognitive, emotional, social, and moral development of adolescents in the contexts of family, peers, school, work, and the media. It discusses major theories, methods of studying adolescents, adolescent development, and contemporary adolescent issues and concerns (e.g., work, school, media, sexuality, and suicide).

This course should be useful to parents, teachers, students, and any individuals who deal with adolescents in their life and work.

Course Outcomes

  1. Discuss the historical and modern conceptualizations of adolescence, including G. Stanley hall’s Storm-and-Stress views, Margaret Mead’s views, and stereotypes of adolescence.
  2. Evaluate research methods employed in developmental psychology.
  3. Produce a paper which synthesizes research in adolescent psychology.
  4. Identify the Biological Foundations of adolescent development, including changes in physical development and health.
  5. Compare the Cognitive Foundations of adolescent development.
  6. Explore the Psychoanalytic Foundations of adolescent development.
  7. Investigate topics regarding adolescent development of the “Self” and “Identity”.
  8. Examine Emotional and Personality development in adolescence.
  9. Explore topics related to Gender & Sexuality in adolescence.
  10. Review Moral Development in adolescence.
  11. Discuss topics regarding Families and adolescence.
  12. Examine Peers & Romantic Relationships in adolescence.
  13. Review topics and research related to Schools & adolescence.
  14. Explore Achievement, Work, and Careers for adolescents.
  15. Contrast topics in Culture & adolescence.
  16. Summarize Problems in adolescence.
