PSYC-184 Exceptional People

Credits 3 / 3 Contact Hours
Pre-requisite: Placement into ACRD-090, ACRD-091 or ACRD-092, completion of ELAP-110 with a minimum grade of 2.0, or successful completion of ACRD-080. 
This course focuses on children who are exceptional; specifically, children who differ from the norm (either above or below) to such an extent that they require specialized services. Different types of exceptionalities will be studied, including intellectual disabilities, emotional disorders, learning disabilities, communication disorders, and gifted children. The course covers understanding and servicing individuals, as well as managing a classroom/childcare facility using methods such as inclusion.

Course Outcomes
  1. Compare and contrast provisions of legislation in the United States concerning the educational rights of children and adults with exceptionalities
  2. Analyze and evaluate their own cultural norms and values in relation to those of persons with disabilities.
  3. Identify the basic causes and etiology of high and low incidence disabilities in schools.
  4. Identify the characteristics of high and low incidence disabilities represented in schools.
  5. Demonstrate practical and educational skills for effectively working with individuals with disabilities.
  6. Identify and explain types of assessments used in the identification of exceptional children
  7. Explain best practices and current trends concerning the prevention and remediation of disabilities.
  8. Appraise the impact of a disability on the individual and family unit.
  9. Describe the ranges of services available for individuals with disabilities in the school system.
