ENGL-211 Introduction to Storytelling Literature

Credits 3 / 3 Contact Hours
Pre-requisite: Placement into RDNG-030 (ACSR-030), completion of ELAP-110 with a minimum grade of 2.0, or successful completion of RDNG-016 or ACLT-074 with a minimum grade of 3.0. Pre-requisite: Successful completion of ENGL-101 or ENGL-103 with a grade of 2.0 or higher.
This course is designed to help you gain confidence as you learn the hows and whys of presenting books and oral tales to children. This course is designed to provide the theory and practice of oral techniques used in telling stories and reading aloud in a daycare pre-school elementary classroom or library.

Course Outcomes
1. Characterize literary elements of a story 2. Apply criteria for evaluating picture books, folklore and poetry for children 3. Analyze a given genre of children’s literature (prose) 4. Analyze samples of children’s poetry 5. Use the writing process 6. Create individual oral presentations that meet stated criteria 7. Contribute to a group effort that ensures the group presentation meets quality standards 8. Demonstrate satisfactory oral communication skills such as tone, pitch, rate, gestures and eye contact that support and enhance the story’s characterization, plot and connection to the intended audience 9. Identify the pre-literacy or literacy skills emphasized in a given book or story 10. Express creativity through the creation of props and extension activities 11. Apply skills learned in the course to an actual community performance 12. Engage in on-going assessment of self and peers
