ENGL-100 College Reading and Study Skills

Credits 3 / 3 Contact Hours
Pre-requisite: Placement into ENGL-100 (ACSR-100), completion of ELAP-120 with a 2.0, or completion of RDNG-030, ACLT-075 or ACLT-076.
Placement into this course is determined by testing. The course provides students with repeated opportunities to work with written print in an effort to develop a greater understanding of the purposes of construction of meaning and the acquistion of reading strategies and skills.

Course Outcomes
1. Incorporate new exposed vocabulary words into discussion and reflective responses 2. Utilize narrative and expository material to identify the topic, main idea, and supportive details 3. Integrate prior knowledge with material you have read to enhance understanding of written print 4. Demonstrate the ability to identify the author’s purpose 5. Read stories and articles to identify the author’s patterns 6. Develop a strategy to monitor your comprehension 7. Construct meaning from written print for discussion in class 8. Use a journal to express your thoughts regarding concepts and ideas gleaned from reading assignments 9. Utilize critical reading skills to evaluate reading assignments 10. Analyze reading assignments for discussion and/or compose summaries
