GEOG-147 Geography of Latin America

Prerequisite: Placement into RDNG-016  (ACSR-016)
A systematic and regional approach to the study of the natural setting the cultural milieu and the economic factors of Latin America. Similarities and differences within and between countries and regions are stressed as are the special relationships that exist between Latin America and the United States.

Course Outcomes
1. Locate and identify the major physical (natural), cultural, and economic-spatial features of the realm on outline map 2. Describe and delineate the spatial extent of the major contribution of the Pre-Columbian societies. Describe the role they have played in shaping the contemporary cultural and social geography of the realm 3. Describe the Spanish, Portuguese and other European colonial infusions in the regions 4. Describe and delineate the spatial parameters of the African diaspora in the new world 5. Differentiate between the various sub-regions in Latin America in terms of the political, cultural, and economic regional geography 6. Understand the geographic essentials of each Latin American republic including its economic base, natural and cultural environments, and economic development potential
