MUS.-183 World Music and Culture

Pre-requisite: Placement into ACRD-090, ACRD-091 or ACRD-092, completion of ELAP-110 with a minimum grade of 2.0, or successful completion of ACRD-080; Recommended: ENGL-101  
While focusing on the music this class also covers the culture and history of countries throughout the world. It allows the student to experience the sights sounds and tastes of Africa the Caribbean Asia and Indonesia. No prior music experience required.

Course Outcomes

  1. Recognize the basic elements of music including: timbre, melody, rhythm, harmony, and texture.
  2. Define the terms associated with the basic elements of music.
  3. Apply a growing knowledge and understanding of the elements of music to assess musical examples using developing critical listening skills.
  4. Identify various musical cultures throughout the world and instruments from those cultures.
  5. Distinguish the music from one culture to another through the identification of musical characteristics specific to that culture.
  6. Identify and discuss the connection between the development of music and its function within the changing of society and culture.
  7. Describe how music reflects the political and social issues of a given society through written reflections and/or class discussions.
  8. Discuss the elements of key musical examples from world music history and world cultures and traditions.
  9. Think critically about music, culture and performance.
  10. Develop writing, listening and research skills.
