ASL.-100 American Sign Language I

Credits 4 / 4 Contact Hours
Placement into RDNG-016 (ACSR-016). 
In this course, students will study the basic structure of American Sign Language through interaction and storytelling.  Reading assignments will emphasize the life and culture of American Deaf people.  Specific ASL Discourse conversational cues and norms will be covered in order to support students’ language and cultural immersion experiences while attending Deaf Community Events.  Students will be exposed to the many career paths that can be enhanced by the study of ASL, as well as those specific to ASL fluency, such as sign language interpreter education.  

Course Outcomes
1. Engage in basic dialogue using ASL vocabulary, functions and grammar. 2. Develop ASL discourse cues and norms in order to incorporate culturally appropriate conversation behaviors 3. Give and follow instructions in ASL. 4. Ask and answer questions in ASL. 5. Present narratives using ASL in front of class 6. Develop an understanding of how ASL knowledge can enhance student career goals, as well as learning about careers specific to ASL fluency such as Sign Language interpreting  7. Begin focused study of ASL fingerspelling in order to develop expressive and receptive skills and knowledge of appropriate use of fingerspelling
